The theme of our lesson is «At the hotel». There is an International Congress in Moscow. The theme of the Congress is «Science for Peace and Progress». Scientists from different continents are coming to the Congress: from Europe, Asia, North and South America, Australia and Africa. The schedule of the Congress is busy: sessions, sittings, round-table talks, conferences, interviews, exhibitions and a large social program.

We are participants of the Congress. Our group is large. There are 18 people on the list. There are 8 ladies and 10 gentlemen in our group. One man is not coming, he is ill. The others are coming in a day or two. All members of our group are attractive and hardworking. We are going to work hard at the Congress. The motto of our group is «Friendship Makes Wonders».

I believe all members of our group are pleased to be in Moscow.

Before people go on a trip to another country they read something about the country they are going to or speak to those people who have been there. So, what do you know about Russia?

  1. Is it the biggest country in the world?
  2. What mountains divide Russia into two parts?
  3. Russia is a very rich country. What is it rich in?
  4. What river is the longest in Europe?
  5. What seas and oceans wash Russia?
  6. What can you say about Russian symbols?
  7. What can you say about Russian people?

We are at the airport now. We are here to meet our friends Russell Brundon, Arthur Clark, Maurice Morgan, Bernard Berg and Wesley West.

Attention, please! The participants of the International Congress are requested to assemble at Exit 3.

My name is Russell Brundon. I am a sociologist and a head of the UNESCO group. I am from London, Great Britain. I speak English, French and Italian. My hobby is reading. I like to read interesting books when I have free time. My favorite book is «Romeo and Juliet» by Shakespeare. They say, I'm very modest, but I know that I'm a born speaker. I'm very hardworking, because I like my profession most of all. I am a reliable friend. I am 40. I am divorcee, but I have a son. My son is a schoolboy. He lives with his mother. I like my job and my family. It's my first visit to Moscow. I'm very lucky to be here.

My name is Maurice Morgan. I'm from Montreal, Canada. I am a historian by education, but they say, I'm an artist by nature. Painting is my hobby, but I'm just a beginner. My mother is French; my father is American, so it's difficult to say what nationality I am. I'm not married yet.

Hotels»

When people travel they almost always stay at hotels or guest-houses. It is necessary to remember the following:

  1. The first thing to do is to book a room in advance by letter, telephone or telegram, or you may arrive at the hotel and be told that there are no rooms available.
  2. On arrival at the hotel go to the reception desk and confirm your reservation. The clerk will then give you a registration form to fill in and sign (the form is filled in block letters).
  3. At large hotels you may ask for any service by telephone. You tell the telephone operator if you want to be called at a certain time; you call room service when you want a meal or drinks; if you need something (say, a suit or a dress cleaned or pressed).
  4. Let the hotel manager know in advance the day and the time of your departure.

Answer the questions:
Why is it necessary to book a room in advance?

What do you do on arrival at the hotel? What services can you ask for at large hotels by telephone?

You have booked the rooms in the hotel by phone, so on arrival you must confirm your reservation, get the key and fill in your hotel cards. This is a manager of our hotel; he wants to tell you about the hotel.

I have a double room. My room is number 48. My room is large enough. The room is very comfortable, clean, cozy, and sunny. There is a TV-set, a fridge, a telephone in it. It faces the yard, so it isn't noisy. But I share the room with an opera singer. He likes his job very much. He is a good, talented singer. He is a strong and clever man. But he rehearses day and night. When he is rehearsing, Г can't work and I can't sleep. I need a room to work and sleep in, not to listen to his songs. Are there any vacant rooms in the hotel?

My room is large enough. It faces the garden, so it is quiet. But I don't like a man who is next door to me. He is a musician. He plays the violin. He is preparing for the Tchaikovsky Competition. But it is very annoying. I need privacy for my work. Can you offer me another room?

The participants of the International Congress are invited to the conference-hall to take part in the press-conference «Friendship Makes Wonders».

Ladies and gentlemen! Dear friends!

It has become an important tradition to meet at the International Congress every year. We attach great importance to our friendship. We can learn a lot about the

countries we are from, about traditions of our countries. Really friendship does work wonders.

On behalf of the participants of the International Congress it is my honor and duty to declare our press-conference open. I think we should create a friendly atmosphere and give the floor to our guests.

A HOME IN ENGLAND

I work in London, but I do not live there. I live in one of the suburbs, catch the morning train to town and come back in the evening.

When I come home in the evening, I walk from the station to my house.

Like most English houses mine is of two storeys; but I do not talk about the ground floor and the first floor. We always say upstairs and downstairs.

Downstairs are the living-rooms. They are the dining-room, the sitting-room and the kitchen. Upstairs are the bedrooms, the bathroom, and the nursery for the children.

The largest room in the house and the one with the best furniture is the sitting-room. This is the room where we receive visitors. The ceiling is only about ten feet high, as is usual in England. In England we have to keep our houses warm for most of the year, so almost all ceilings are built low.

The front garden consists mostly of a grass lawn. I am very proud of my front garden.

With thousands of other Englishmen I agree that «there's no place like home».

AUSTRALIA

Australia is a federal state within the Commonwealth of Nations. Its territories are the continent of Australia, the island of Tasmania and a number of smaller islands. It has an area of about 8 million square kilometers.

There are four big cities in Australia: Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and Brisbane. Each city is a capital of the state in which it is situated. Most of the factories are concentrated; in or around the big cities. They produce goods for motor-car, machine-building, clothing and food industries. Australia is an industrial and agricultural country. It is rich in natural resources and minerals, so foreign trade is important for its economy.

Australia is an exporter of raw materials, agricultural products, consumer goods, and equipment. The country buys abroad farm equipment, office equipment and other goods.

Russian-Australian trade relations were established about 60 years ago. Russia bought from Australia wool and wheat. For many years the trade was rather onesided as Australia's import from Russia was small. Now the countries are trying to extend their trade and cooperation. Several new contracts have recently been signed.

CANADA

Canada has an area of nearly 10 million square kilometers. Its western coast is washed by the Pacific Ocean and its Eastern coast by the Atlantic Ocean. There are many islands in the north of Canada. The Niagara Falls are one of the most splendid sights of the world.

The population of Canada is over 24 million people. In the country there are 330,000 Indians and 25,000 Eskimos. The people of Canada came from Britain, France and other countries.

Ottawa is the capital of Canada. Other large important cities are Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton, Hamilton, Winnipeg and Quebec.

Canada consists often provinces and two territories. Each province has its own government. The Federal Parliament consists of the Senate and the House of Commons. Canada has two official languages - English and French.

I am from Montreal. Montreal is the biggest French-speaking city in the world after Paris. No one admits its publicly but probably every city in Canada is jealous of Montreal. The city is world-famous. It hosted Expo-67 and the 1976 world Olympics. Its subway system is so handsome that it's been called the longest underground art gallery in the world.

Even the food is famous there. French cuisine is the best of all, of course, but Chinese, Spanish, Spanish, Italian and English restaurants offer their dishes with the same pride and care. The best of Montreal's restaurants aren't cheap. But if you can't afford to spend too much on food, check the menu and the price list which is posted outside every restaurant.

Advertising penetrates all spheres of our life and you just can not avoid it. You come across it everywhere, when you read a newspaper, watch TV, go to a local grocery, take your mail, etc. Everything from toothpicks to American Green Card is advertised. Advertising is a growing tendency in our society. There are different means of advertising: posters, leaflets, booklets, TV and radio ads, exhibitions, presentation parties, conferences. Today we have an advertising film festival. Three advertising agencies take part in the festival. The specialists of these agencies have prepared the films. We'll estimate professional skills of the specialists and find out which agency works best of all. The films are the following: "Tourist Firm", "Plant", and "New Hotel".

«Tourist Firm»

Manager: Good morning. I am a manager of a tourist firm. Our head office is located in the centre of Perm. There are different specialists in our office: accountants, managers, programmers, a secretary, an expert. Our office is state-of-the-art. There is office equipment there: personal computers, printers, a fax, a telex, a copier, a telephone. Everybody works efficient and fast. Everybody knows how to run the office equipment.

Journalist: Tell us, please, what trips are popular this summer?

Manager: As usual many people want to go to the Crimea or to Turkey. We can offer different tours to Western Europe: to France and Germany, to Great Britain or Ireland. Some people like to go to exotic trips: to New Zealand, Africa, to or South America. For example if you want to go to Brazil you will stay at the first-class hotel in the capital and then travel about the country. There are lots of places of interest in Brazil. If you are going for a holiday to Switzerland you will ski in the mountains and then stay at the hotel in Geneva. Our managers can tell the customers about the program of every certain trip in detail.

You'll visit the museum of the Beatles in Liverpool, Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of Shakespeare, university towns Cambridge and Oxford. By the way, I studied in Great Britain in Oxford. Oh, my youth!.. Sorry.

«Plant»

Journalist: Today in our program we shall try to tell you as much as we can about Nissan UK Ltd. And for this purpose we came to the General Manager office and we hope General Manager will tell us about the history of this company and its present position in the market.

General Manager: Nissan UK Limited was founded in 1969. At first it was just a trading company. It imported cars from Japan and sold them in the UK. In 1970 the company's share of the UK car market was only 0.2 % but the company grew fast. By 1974 we were the UK's leading car importer. When the UK became one of Nissan's main export markets, the company decided to build an assembly plant there. We found a suitable site and in 1986 commissioned the first production line. At the beginning the plant's production was rather small because of the import restrictions. But by 1988 the plant increased production. The plant is assembling cars for the continent as well as the UK. In 1988 we exported 11,000 cars to Europe. In 1990 the figure rose to over 100,000.

Journalist: Now we are at.the assembly shop. Different models of Nissan are assembled here: Patrol, Almera, Primera. Assembly is completely automated and is of very high quality. Now Sales Manager of the plant tells us a few words.

Sales Manager: Our plant is the pride of the UK and European automobile manufacturing. Established with the goal of "profitably building the highest quality cars in Europe", it combines Japanese working practices with European values. The UK manufacturing success is echoed throughout Europe. On a global scale, Nissan is one of the most relied upon marquees for delivering success. As one of the biggest companies in Japan and a serious force in North America, our vehicles are an integral part of a world-wide business strategy. Nissan has also been setting records on the race track. The Primera dominated last year's British Touring Car Championships, taking both first and second place in the Drivers Championship as well as winning the Manufacturers and Team Championships.

Journalist: Now we are at the service station. We want to listen to the car owners' opinion.

Car Owner: Four months ago I bought Nissan Primera and I can say the assembly is qualitative, the engine is very powerful, the top speed is high, the salon is roomy and comfortable. The car is running smoothly. It's a pleasure to drive it. But the expense of fuel is not economical. It is usual for the cars of this>

Journalist: Why are you here? Does your car require to be repaired?

Car Owner: A day before yesterday I brought in my car for the State Safety Inspection.

Mechanic: We did the safety inspection and we found a few problems with the car.

Car Owner: Did you? What kind?

Mechanic: First, there is a hole in the muffler.

Car Owner: I guess, the car has been... kind of noisy lately, but that's strange, anyway.

Mechanic: We can replace the muffler...

Car Owner: OK. When can I have my car ready?

Mechanic: Well... I guess... after we fix the radiator and...

Car Owner: What's wrong with it?

Mechanic: It leaks.

Car Owner: Leaks? I never had any problem with it. The car has been great. Mechanic: Oh, it's a very good car... except for the brakes, of course.

Car Owner: The brakes? What are you talking about?

Mechanic: The brakes have to be fixed. It's not safe to drive now.

Car Owner: Wait a moment. How much is it gonna cost me?

Mechanic: Well, it is difficult to say now... I suppose, that would not come to more than five hundred dollars.

Car Owner: What? Did I get it right? Five hundred?

Mechanic: Yes, with your headlights...

Car Owner: What about my headlights? My car was not in an accident. I just brought it in for the inspection.

Mechanic: Well... the headlights have to be adjusted. They are not safe... I would also recommend....

Car Owner: Hold on for a minute. My car is brand new.

Mechanic: Excuse me, sir. But I wouldn't call an eighty-three Ford brand new.

Car Owner: Eighty-three Ford? I bought my Nissan Primera four months ago.

Mechanic: Are you Art Weaver?

Car Owner: I'm Bart Weaver, B-A-R-T!

Mechanic: I'm terribly sorry. Yes, of course! I was talking about another car. Art Weaver brought me his car the same day. What a coincidence! I can't believe it. Please, accept my apology. Everything is fine with your car. You can collect it any time.

Car Owner: That's OK. Things do happen.

Journalist: Well, Nissan is worth buying. Thanks. Good-bye.

«A New Hotel».

Journalist: Dear friends! Our TV company begins work.

Our city is one of the industrial centers of Perm region. Different joint-stock companies and joint ventures are appearing here: a chocolate factory, a macaroni factory, a chemical factory, producing cigarette filters. Foreign investors are interested in organizing industrial enterprises in our city. General Director of the chocolate factory is a Syrian businessman, General Director of the macaroni factory is a Vietnamese, the chemical factory "Sertov" is a daughter enterprise of a French concern. These enterprises are equipped with foreign technological lines and machine-tools. Foreign specialists often come to the city to do adjustment or to provide training for the local personnel.

The company's profit before tax increased twice. The total dividend was equal to 8% last year. Our shareholders must have been happy. I am satisfied with the work of our company. We are all proud of our success. In business if you don't go forward you go backward. Success doesn't continue automatically. We are planning to streamline our business, to work out the policy of careful investment and above all to better appreciate the selfless efforts of our employees working hard towards the success of our business.

It was decided to start with the posts of Sales Manager, Chief Accountant, Secretary and Office Manager. The advertisements about the vacant positions have been inserted in several newspapers intended for businessmen and the representation office received a lot of applications.

Now you have a chance to take part in the interview to apply for these posts. We ask you to attach your curriculum vitae with your letter of application and we shall study them carefully.

Is a job of a manager (an accountant, a secretary, an economist) attractive for? Why? Why did you decide to change your work? Why do you apply to our company? What do you know about it? Do you know foreign languages? What is your experience? What was your salary? What is your hobby? Are you married? Have you any children? Are you ready for business trips abroad? What salary wouldyou like to have? What do you know about our firm? What are your main strengths? How do you relieve everyday tensions? Are you a leader, an entrepreneur by nature? Have you a driving license?

What will be the major focus of efforts in the next few years? What responsibilities and obligations do you suggest during the first year? What about traveling: length, where? When do you want me to start?
